Couples Counselling
This past week my father arrived in the US on a business trip. Something to do with something in Detroit. But he spent the last few days of his trip here in Philadelphia with my brother and I. For those of you who don't know it yet, my brother Deji is engaged. He proposed to his girlfriend after riding on horseback to the top of a scenic mountain like something straight out of a romance novel.
To be honest I'm a bit jealous and slightly inconvenienced by his actions. With me having recently begun a relationship myself, and my girlfriend now aware of Deji's wonderful proposal, the bar is set quite high if my relationship gets that far. I mean, it doesn't get much higher than a mountain-top.
Yeah, you like how I just casually announced Deji's marriage and my girlfriend don't you? Great! Let's talk about something else. I guess it is because both his boys are in relationships, my Dad was a man on a mission when he arrived - and his mission was couples counselling.
Dad spoke to me personally, my brother personally, both of us together, and both of us with our ladies, and what was most interesting about it for me was how much of the opinions and advice he expressed were very similar to my own. In fact it is quite likely that my Father agrees with almost every article I have written about relationships on The Red String. How amazing is that?
But more important were the things I had never thought about, things I never knew, and things I would never have considered doing had we not spoken. Things like reading "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" or "Type Talk" or asking my girlfriend to do the same.
We have only just started reading these books now, so I can't say much about them. But they come highly recommended not just by father, but by thousands of couples around the world. In time, I will surely write my own review of the books for you to read - and in all likelyhood, I would highly recommend them too.
Knowing that, I have decided to jump the gun and recommend them right now for all those I know currently in a relationship. Regardless of what stage of your relationship you are in, newly started like me, almost married like my brother, already married like my father (who apparently first read these books 7 years into his marriage), or perhaps near breakup like many others who have turned to these books for help, I recommend these books to you right now and hope they will help you see your relationships through.
