We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Like No One is Too Small to Make A Difference, the book I read this month was equally short and sweet. We Should All Be Feminists is the book version of a TED talk Ms. Adichie gave back in December 2012 at TedXEuston.
The book simply argues that we should all subscribe to the dictionary definition of Feminist:
Feminist: a person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes
Because this definition is not too much to ask for. In making this point, she highlights how all over the world and especially in Nigeria, this is not the case. The word Feminist is used in some cases to slight women who stand up for their rights, and to imply other things besides the strict definition of the word.
She tells sometimes humourous stories of her encounters with the word, and its interpretations. She talks about instances where decidedly gender influenced assumptions and choices have affected her. I will not reveal what these examples were nor describe them in more detail because I want to leave these for you to enjoy in the book, or in the TED talk.
Suffice to say, Ms. Adichie makes her point.
